Following the
footsteps of previous High Commissioners, the new High
Commissioner for Sri-Lanka in the United Kingdom, His
Excellency Dr. Chris Nonis visited Thames Buddhist Vihara to
pay respects to the Head of the Vihara, Pahalagama
Somaratana Chief Sanga Nayaka Thera and other resident
Venerables. The High Commissioner praised the religious,
social, educational and cultural activities undertaken at
the Vihara for the benefit of all Srilankans in the Greater
London area. Commenting on the peaceful environment that the
Vihara premises provides, Dr. Nonis said that it lends
itself as an ideal venue for the practise of Buddhist
meditation which he used to practise at Vajirarama Temple in
Sri-Lanka.
The
Venerables chanted ‘Pirith’ and blessed the High
Commissioner wishing him good health, long life and success
in his official duties. The High Commissioner met some
Members of the Thames Meditation Society and its President
Dr. Herath Kularatne. Before leaving Dr. Nonis enjoyed
refreshments with members of his staff C. Kularatne and
Ekanayake who accompanied him. The Patron of the Thames
Meditation Society, Madawala Hemananda presented the High
Commissioner copies of his two books, ‘Nature & Buddhism’
and ‘Quantum Theory & Buddhism’.
