During
1988-1989 many lost their lives mainly due to the uprising
against Indian invasion and so called Indian peace accord.
On top of that there was a longstanding suppression of
political rights of all political parties. Hundreds of
student activists, lawyers, doctors, clergy and media men
lost their lives. They did not have their basic right, a
dignified burial. Their relatives never had an opportunity
to mourn about the demise of their loved ones. The biggest
loss was suffered by the JVP. Almost all of their top
leaders, Rohana Wijeweera, Upathissa Gamanayaka and Sumith
Athukorala were assassinated.
There was a
traditional alms giving ceremony at Athula Dassana Buddhist
Temple in London Heathrow, to offer merits to all those,
irrespective of their political allegiance, religious faith
or language they spoke, who lost their lives during this
turbulent times. It was organized by Jathika Nidhahas
Peremuna (JNP) London and Norway branches, Hounslow
Tharunakala and Ipswich Sri Lankan Ekamuthuwa, on the 13th
November 2011. |
