Ananda
Summer Ball was held on Saturday the 2nd July
2011 at the Renaissance Hotel Heathrow. Old Anandians in
the UK have been organising this much awaited annual
summer dance continuously for over two decades now. It
is one of main fund raising as well as social events in
their annual calendar. It has become a semi-tradition
for members of the Association of Old Anandians in the
UK, their family and friends, and well-wishers of the
association to be part of this grand event with all the
pomp and pageantry. It was indeed delightful to see
Anandians, who just passed out of the college,
socialising and building camaraderie with Anandians, who
passed out of the same education institute several
decades ago.
This year’s
event was presided by the current President of the
association, Mr Harshaka Kannangara. As always there was
a full house and guests were entertained with reception
drinks, three-course sit-down meal and fantastic music
throughout the evening. Mr Damian Wickramatillake, who
is one of the leading entertainers in Colombo
western/pop music sphere, coupled with Exceed band to
provide enthralling music till the early hours of
following morning. Along the way, some guests were lucky
enough to win many exciting raffle prizes that were
given away by generous organisers.
As a new
initiative, this year’s organising committee decided to
use this high profile event to recognise and appreciate
senior members, who’ve done an invaluable service to the
association in the past. Accordingly Major NLC Perera
and Dr GWS Pallewela, who were among the founding
members of the association and cornerstones of it since
then, were honoured and given a memento for their
voluntary service.
