This year’s
Sri Lankan New Year Celebration was held on Sunday 17th
April 2011 at the Polish Social Club, Oldham. Approximately
200 Sri Lankan families from all over the North West of
England and other neighbouring areas such as Leeds,
Liverpool etc. witnessed this colourful event.
The proceedings started with the
religious observances in the morning and after the midday
meal the actual celebrations began with the lighting of the
traditional oil lamp, while the jayamangala gatha was being
recited by the children of Ketumati Dhamma School. The
audience were entertained with traditional songs, music,
dramas and games performed by the adults and children.
Afterwards, the traditional Sri Lankan food Kevum and
Kiribat was served. |
