Helplanka and UK volunteers proud to help rural Deaf and Blind children in Sri Lanka in July 2010

Two groups of UK volunteers, including four teachers from Barry, Wales and Carshalton, Surrey, visited Sri Lanka as part of the Helplanka Schools Twinning programme teaching English and sport at rural schools in Panadura and Dankotuwa.

Organised by Helplanka UK and accompanied by Sam Goonetillake Chief Executive, the groups visited a number of Deaf and Blind schools and orphanages organising the distribution of educational equipment, computers, books and toys.  Games, parties and face-painting were also the order of the day.   Helplanka was assisted by the generous contribution of Odel who donated over 130 new T shirts to a Deaf and Blind School in Mahawewa, and a tree planting programme was conducted in collaboration with Touchwood Investments.

Commenting on this year’s programme Sam Goonetillake said: “I would like to thank both the UK school groups for their hard work and dedication to helping disadvantaged children in Sri Lanka, for their generosity and above all their continued friendship to Sri Lankan children.  Their contribution has made a valuable long term difference in their lives and we hope that we can continue to support these projects in the future.”
