London Star programme receives a Merit Award in the UK - 24th July 2010

Vishva Lanka International Higher Education Institute of Musicology, Aesthetic, Fine Art and Cultural Welfare Foundation based in Leicester, UK  has give the London Star production team a merit award for the services they have rendered through their programme to promote  the Sinhala music in the wider world. In a ceremony held in Leicester the award was presented to the producer of London Star Sumith Kadawathage by the Lord Mayor of the Leicester City Council. London Star Director Niroshan Kahawattha, the Visual Director Tissa Madawela and all five London Star finalists also attended the ceremony as special guests.

Director of Vishva Lanka Foundation Visharadha Narendranath Tharshi Warnakulasuuriya said in his introduction that the London Star concept and the programme is unique as this is the first ever talent search organized for the Sri Lankan expatriate community any where in the world. He also said that for almost a year this programme has shown the extraordinary talents of Sri Lankan people living away from their motherland , including singing, music composing, programme production, programme direction,  sound and lighting direction, set designing, videography, video editing, make-up, choreography, and costume design. London Star production team includes not only Sinhala expatriates but Sri Lankan Tamils and Muslims who are settled in London too. “As a result of London Star, out of the contestants who appeared during almost a year long broadcasts, many have become household names in Sri Lanka” he said.

During the Vishva Lanka Foundation’s second anniversary celebrations and the prize distribution programme held on the same day London Star finalists Eranda Wickramasinghe, Maynu Thathsaranee Abekoon, Nilakshi Gunathilake, Sayuri Serasinghe and Shenik Hiran sang several group songs bringing the mixed audience to their feet.
