A mass demonstration
organised by the Sri Lankans Against
Terrorism (SLAT) in UK was held on the
14 of February 2009 opposite the British
Prime Ministers residence No.10 Downing
Street, London. The protest was mainly
focused on the LTTE’s acts of human
rights violations and the cowardly use
of the human shield. The gathering was
attended by over 4000 peace lovers,
according to metropolitan police sources
and was quite energetic with Anti-LTTE
slogans being shouted by the patriotic
Sri Lankans. A petition which had
several thousands of signatures, was
handed over to Prime Minister Gordon
Brown’s office by representatives of
SLAT.
Furthermore, two incidents took place,
where LTTE supporters tried to disrupt
the programme when one tried to set him
self on fire. Quick actions by the
Metropolitan Police resulted in the
arrests of the culprits.
This event was organised on very short
notice and participation was from all
walks of Sri Lankan diaspora in the UK
was commendable, resulting in a huge
success of the protest. |
